Qualifications for US Merchant Marine Academy admission

I'm looking into applying to the US Merchant Marine Academy and I want to know what specific qualifications or requirements are necessary for admission. Are there certain academic standards or physical requirements I should be aware of?

Admission to the US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is competitive and involves a series of steps. Here, I will summarize the main qualifications and requirements that you should be aware of in order to increase your chances of securing a spot.

Firstly, you need to be a United States citizen and between the ages of 17-25 on July 1 of the year you enter the Academy.

On the academic front, like other colleges and universities, you'll have to show a solid high school record. While the Academy does not specify a minimum GPA, it does state that your high school curriculum should include 4 years of English, 3 years of Math (including Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry), and 1 year of Physics. SAT/ACT scores are required but no minimum scores are specified, showing that the Academy likely takes a holistic approach to review these scores in the context of your overall application.

You also need a nomination from a U.S. Representative, a U.S. Senator, or the Vice President of the United States. It's important to start the nomination application process well in advance, as it can be competitive.
