Scholarships for Students with Auditory Processing Disorder?

I have auditory processing disorder and am wondering if there are any scholarships available for students with this condition. Any advice on where to start looking or how to increase my chances of getting one?

Indeed, there are many scholarships out there for students with unique situations and needs, Auditory Processing Disorder included! One place to start your search is through national and local organizations for students with disabilities, such as the national and regional chapters of the Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDAA) or the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Other scholarships are not designated specifically for students with APD but are for students with broader categories of disabilities. Examples include the Anne Ford Scholarship and Allegra Ford Thomas Scholarship, both offered by the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the Google Lime Scholarship for students with any disability who are pursuing a degree in computer science or a related field.

In terms of increasing your chances of securing a scholarship, here are some tips:

1. Start your search early: This will allow you to meet application deadlines and give you the time required to compile the necessary documentation.

2. Pay attention to detail: Ensure that you accurately represent your abilities and challenges, and meet all the scholarship criteria. You could consider expressing how you've worked to overcome your auditory processing disorder, as it demonstrates tenacity and resilience.

3. Get organized: Create a calendar or spreadsheet to keep track of application deadlines, submission requirements, and other important details

4. Customize your applications: Each scholarship committee has its priorities and values. Make sure your essay or application clearly shows how you meet the particular criteria of that scholarship.

5. Apply widely: Aim to apply to as many scholarships as possible that you are eligible for. The more scholarships you apply to, the greater your chances of being awarded at least one.

Remember, there are many resources out there, not just scholarships, to support students who struggle with auditory processing disorder. Tutoring, therapy, assistive technology, and other educational supports can be just as valuable as financial assistance in achieving educational success. Finally, don't forget to reach out to the financial aid office at the colleges you're applying to, as they may have their scholarships for students with disabilities, or they may be able to point you to other resources. Happy hunting!
