Can you apply for scholarships before applying to college?

I'm starting to research scholarships as a junior, and I'm curious if I can apply for scholarships before I actually apply to colleges. Would that make a difference? Or should I wait until I’ve sent in my college applications?

Absolutely, you can and should apply for scholarships even before you apply to your desired colleges. Many scholarships are not contingent upon college admission and have their own separate application processes. Scholarships can be extremely competitive, so it's never too early to start researching and applying, especially because some scholarship deadlines may close before college application deadlines.

When applying for scholarships, be sure to carefully check their eligibility requirements and deadlines, because they can greatly vary. For instance, some scholarships are available only for specific grade levels, so if you're a high school junior, you'll want to look for scholarships open to juniors. Other criteria could include geographic location, area of study interest, community service, or demonstrated financial need.

If you secure a scholarship prior to applying to colleges, it can also bolster your college applications. It validates your academic accomplishments or other specific skills, and it shows that you're proactive and committed to financing your education.

One final note: don't forget to also apply to the scholarships offered by the colleges to which you're applying once you submit your applications. These are usually accessible through the school's financial aid office and may consider your application to the school as the scholarship application.

So, don't wait! Start your scholarship hunt now. Start with the ones that fit your profile and don't neglect the smaller awards. Every bit can help reduce your financial burden. Good luck!
