Naval Academy breadth requirements—what should I know?

I'm trying to understand the breadth requirements for the Naval Academy. What subjects or areas do these cover, and how important are they in the overall academic program? Are there any specific courses I should be taking in high school to prepare?

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) aims to offer a comprehensive and well-rounded education that equips its midshipmen with the knowledge and skills required for leadership roles in both the Navy and Marine Corps. To achieve this, the Academy has core breadth requirements that all students are required to fulfill, regardless of their major.

The curriculum at USNA includes a vast area of subjects falling under disciplines of humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, and several professional military courses. The humanities and social sciences requirement includes courses in English, history, political science, and economics while the science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) requirements include classes in chemistry, physics, calculus, electrical engineering, cyber science, and a plebe (freshman) summer math studies course. Additionally, all students take classes on Naval sciences like seamanship, navigation, leadership and ethics, and physical education.

Regarding preparation in high school, strong academic performance across all subjects is crucial, but specifically, a strong foundation in math and sciences will serve you well, as some of these classes will be mandatory at USNA regardless of your selected major. Advanced-level courses like AP Calculus, AP Physics, or equivalent can be especially beneficial to prepare for the rigor of USNA's STEM courses. Also, given the leadership focus of the academy, extracurricular activities that showcase your leadership potential can be beneficial.

Ultimately, these breadth requirements are designed to provide a solid foundation in both the liberal arts and the sciences to ensure that graduates are comprehensively prepared for the diverse challenges they will face in their military careers.
