Applying for scholarships before applying to college?

Is it possible to start applying for scholarships while I'm still figuring out which colleges to apply to? I'm a junior looking for ways to make college more affordable, and I'm curious if I can start early.

It's a smart idea to begin your scholarship applications as early as possible. Many scholarships are independent of specific colleges and are open to all high school students, not just those who have already been accepted into a college. These are often made available by external organizations, businesses, or foundations, and they can be based on multiple criteria, such as academic achievement, artistic or athletic talent, community service involvement, or personal experiences.

For example, you could apply for scholarships like the Doodle for Google competition if you're the creative type. If you've done substantial community service, scholarships such as the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards could be a great option. Additionally, certain national competitions offer scholarships, like the Regeneron Science Talent Search for those into stem research.

Keep in mind to start the process early, as some scholarships have long application processes. It's also a good idea to research thoroughly, as smaller, local scholarships may have fewer applicants than larger, national ones, increasing your chances of receiving the award. Make sure the scholarships are reliable and not scams by verifying their legitimacy.

Always remember to check the eligibility criteria before applying to make sure you're a good candidate. Don't forget to submit all necessary materials, and get started on those essays sooner rather than later. Good luck with your applications. Starting early is far better than waiting until the last minute!
