The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is a unique institution with distinct application requirements. Students typically apply while in high school. Here are some steps you'd need to follow:

1. Academic Metrics: The USMMA doesn't mandate a minimum GPA, but they don't just look at your overall GPA as well. They also consider the rigor of classes you've taken. Regarding standardized tests, the USMMA accepts either SAT or ACT. However, keep in mind that as with any competitive institution, higher scores can only assist your application. NOTE: the Academy does require SAT or ACT despite many universities moving to test-optional policies.

2. Physical Exam: The USMMA requires a pre-screening physical exam, fulfilling DODMERB Medical Fitness Standards.

3. Nomination: Similar to other service academies, applicants must secure a nomination, typically from a U.S. representative, senator, or Vice President.

4. USMMA Personal Data Record and Essay.

Extracurricular activities at the Tier 1 or Tier 2 level, especially those displaying leadership, can strengthen your application. USMMA is particularly interested in applicants with unique life experiences or special skills like music, drama, athletics, or leadership in Scouting, Girl Scouts, Boys/Girls State, Civil Air Patrol, JROTC, etc.

Merchant Marine also values Maritime-related experiences such as Sea Scouts, sailing school, crew for sailing, or working on fishing boats.

As for your application standing out, consider focusing on why you're drawn to a career in maritime or naval services. Highlight times when you've displayed determination, leadership, or public service. Ultimately, the Academy is looking for individuals dedicated to serving their country, hence demonstrating how this goal aligns with your life plans would be beneficial during your application process.

Remember, admission to service academies is competitive. It's great that you're beginning to plan your application. Good luck!
