Scholarships for African American nursing students

I'm looking into scholarships for African American students going into nursing. Do any of you know of programs or organizations that offer support for nursing students like me? Any tips on where to start would be helpful!

Hello and great initiative in seeking out resources! Numerous organizations have scholarships specifically designated for African American students pursuing nursing, while others have scholarships for individuals of all backgrounds who are pursuing nursing. Here's a shortlist of programs to consider:

1. The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) offers numerous scholarships to NBNA members annually. Scholarships award varying amounts and applicants must be currently enrolled in a nursing program (LPN/LVN, ADN, RN-BSN, Generic BSN, Masters, Doctorate).

2. The National Association for Black Veterans (NABVETS) operates an annual scholarship program, and while it's not specifically targeted towards nursing students, it's available to all fields of study.

3. The NAACP has an Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship which is available to current undergraduate students who are members of the NAACP.

Remember, scholarships are not the only financial resources out there. Depending on your financial circumstances, you may qualify for need-based aid at the college or university you attend. It's recommended that you apply for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine your eligibility for federal student aid. The SAI (Student Aid Index), which has replaced EFC, calculates the financial aid you're eligible for.

And one last note: since scholarship application processes typically involve some sort of writing component, whether that's a personal essay or statement explaining why you're a strong fit for the scholarship, remember to show your passion for nursing in your writing.

Hope this helps in your search and best of luck in your nursing career!
