What are the requirements to get into the U.S. Naval Academy?

I'm looking at the U.S. Naval Academy as an option. What are the academic, physical, and personal requirements to get admitted? Are there any steps or tips on boosting my chances of acceptance?

Admission to the U.S. Naval Academy is very competitive, and they consider a candidate's whole person, examining not only academic achievements but also physical and personal attributes. Let's look at each category:

Academic: Although there is no set-in-stone minimum GPA or test score, the Naval Academy looks for applicants who have demonstrated success in rigorous courses, particularly those in math and science. Most admitted students rank in the top 20% of their high school class and have strong SAT or ACT scores. As an example, a competitive SAT score might be at least 600 in each section.

Physical: The Naval Academy requires candidates to pass the Naval Academy Physical Aptitude Examination, which tests strength, endurance, and overall physical ability. This includes push-ups, pull-ups, curl-ups, and a one-mile run.

Personal: Character and leadership are highly valued. The Naval Academy wants to see evidence of personal initiative, an ability to overcome adversity, and a commitment to community service. Candidates should have a record of leadership, whether it's as the captain of a sports team, a role in student government, or an active role in community organizations.

Other steps/requirements include obtaining a nomination (usually from a U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, or the Vice President of the U.S.), passing a medical examination, and completing a personal interview.

As for making your application stand out, a robust application will balance each of these areas; and show a strong academic performance along with demonstrated leadership and a commitment to physical fitness. Volunteering or interning in a naval or military-related setting, if possible, would also be a good sign of commitment and interest. Staying in touch with your regional admissions counselor can help understand more about what they look for in candidates. Good luck as you navigate this process!
