What's it like playing basketball at Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy?

I'm curious about Kings Point’s basketball team. Does anyone know how competitive they are or what being on the team is like? I'm thinking of joining, so details about training and matches would be awesome!

Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy's basketball team, known as the Mariners, competes at the NCAA Division III level and is a member of the Skyline Conference. Keep in mind that in divisions like DIII, the focus is more on the student element in "student-athlete," so while the sport is competitive, there's an emphasis on academics as well.

Now, while I don't have inside scoop on the day-to-day of the basketball team, here's what I can tell you based on general knowledge and reports. A student-athlete on the Kings Point basketball team can expect a rigorous but rewarding experience. Typically, the training schedule would include daily practices that could vary from focused skill drills, to strength and conditioning in the weight room, to extensive team-focused strategies and plays.

The season typically starts in November, with matches often held on weekends. Expect regular travel for away games as part of the Skyline Conference, where you'll compete against other schools in the Metro NY area. Bear in mind that being a student-athlete can be demanding both physically and mentally. It would require good time-management skills in order to balance academic work and sports commitments.

Lastly, being a part of the team gives you a sense of camaraderie. You get to develop leadership skills, teamwork and resilience which are essential qualities in and out of sports. Kings Point also fosters a close-knit community, and having a shared goal in sports would only enhance your sense of belonging.

Think of your decision to be a student-athlete as an enriching aspect of your college years — providing you successes, challenges, friendships, and experiences you'll carry with you beyond the basketball court and Academy. Good luck in making your decision!
