Does Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy offer any job opportunities for students?

As a junior in high school, I'm interested in understanding what job opportunities the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy offers students during their studies or after graduation. Are there specific internships or roles that are popular?

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point is unique among federal service academies because it offers students the opportunity to have hands-on experiences at sea during their studies. During the "Sea Year," typically in the second and third years, students, or midshipmen as they're often called, spend a total of about 300 days at sea on commercial vessels, learning practical skills firsthand in various roles and functions like navigation, operations, and administration. This is effectively like having an extended internship.

Upon graduation, alumni have a number of paths they can follow. The USMMA is primarily a service academy, so one track graduates can take is to serve as an officer in one of the armed forces. However, many choose to work in the private sector within the maritime and transportation industries instead. Jobs post-graduation can be on land or at sea and cover a wide variety of fields including ship operations, maritime law, ship design and construction, environment protection, and port authority management, to name a few.

Bear in mind, however, that by attending the USMMA, you do obligate yourself to a service commitment upon graduation. This includes serving five years in the maritime industry and eight years in the reserves, or five years active duty in any of the armed forces.

In summary, Kings Point prepares graduates for a wide range of practical and rewarding careers related to maritime transportation and infrastructure. The breadth and depth of these opportunities can give you a solid launching point for your future career path.
