ACT: what does it stand for?

Hi! I know this might sound dumb, but I keep hearing about the ACT. What does it actually stand for and what's its purpose in the college admissions process?

Hey there! No worries, it's totally normal to have questions about the ACT. ACT originally stood for American College Testing, but now it's simply referred to as ACT. It's a standardized test often taken by high school students as a part of the college admissions process in the United States.

The ACT is designed to assess your readiness for college-level work by testing your skills in English, mathematics, reading, and science. It also offers an optional writing section. College admissions offices usually consider your ACT scores, along with other factors like your GPA, extracurricular activities, and essays, to evaluate your overall application.

Some colleges have gone test-optional or test-blind in recent years, meaning they either don't require or don't consider standardized test scores. However, many schools still use the ACT (or its alternative, the SAT) as a part of their admissions process. Good luck with your college journey!
