What are some scholarships available for autistic students planning to attend college?

I'm looking for college scholarship opportunities specifically for students with autism. Does anyone know of scholarships that I should be applying for? Any tips for autistic students during the application process would also be really helpful!

There are a range of scholarships out there targeted specifically towards assisting students with autism in funding their post-secondary education. One such scholarship is the Dan Archwamety Scholarship, offered by the Autism Society of Nebraska. This one-time award varies in terms of the amount and is available to Nebraska residents who have been diagnosed with autism.

Similarly, The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) offers the Schwallie Family Scholarship, which distributes a number of $3,000 awards each year for those with an official autism diagnosis and who have been accepted to a two or four-year college or university.

Additionally, there's the Kelly Law Team Autism Scholarship, which offers $1,000 awards to students with a medical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder who are pursuing higher education.

As far as application tips are concerned, it's often beneficial for students with autism to highlight how their unique experiences with the condition have contributed to their personal growth and aspirations in their essays. However, avoid making your entire application about coping with autism; remember to showcase your other interests, achievements, and goals as well.

Given the distinct challenges that students with autism often face in traditional academic environments, it is equally important to seek out colleges that offer resources and services that cater to your needs, such as counseling services, assistance with time management and organization, or courses designed with neurodiversity in mind.

Be sure to work with your high school counselor or use college search tools like CollegeVine's school search to identify such schools. They can also probably provide additional scholarship opportunities you might be eligible to apply for.

Best of luck in your college and scholarship applications! Remember, each application is a learning experience, and even rejections can be valuable in shaping your approach going forward. Don't get discouraged if you don't receive a scholarship you've applied for - keep applying to multiple opportunities and maintain a positive outlook.
