Tips for Getting Scholarships at Out of State Colleges

Does anyone have advice on how to get scholarships for out of state schools? I want to apply to a few out of state colleges, and any tips on finding financial aid opportunities would be awesome.

Applying for scholarships from out-of-state schools is an excellent way to make college more affordable. Here are some tips that could help you in your search:

1. Net Price Calculator: Before anything else, use the net price calculator provided by each college. This will give you an idea of the actual price you'll need to pay after potential aid, excluding merit scholarships. Keep in mind that these are often estimates and the real amount may vary.

2. Start Early: Many merit scholarships have early deadlines, some even before the regular admission application due date. Make sure you're aware of all the dates so you don't miss any opportunities.

3. University Merit Scholarships: Check the scholarships page on the websites of the universities you're interested in. Some schools offer scholarships specifically for out of state students. These are often merit-based, so having strong academic and extracurricular records can increase your chances of winning.

4. Local and National Scholarships: Search for scholarships that aren’t directly affiliated with a school. Several organizations and businesses offer national scholarships that can be used at any college. You can use tools like Appily to find scholarships that match your profile.

5. Write Outstanding Essays: If a scholarship application requires an essay, make sure to put your best foot forward. Avoid cliche topics, make your response personal and unique, and most importantly - answer the question. Having another pair of eyes for proofreading can also be very helpful.

6. FAFSA & CSS Profile: Remember to complete your FAFSA and CSS Profile (if applicable) as early as possible. These applications determine your eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid.

It's important to remember that each college has a different way of distributing financial aid. Some may meet 100% of your demonstrated need, others may only meet a portion, and some may offer more merit aid than need-based aid. Use this as another factor to consider when you're making your college list. Good luck with your scholarship search!
