What sport offers the most scholarships?

With college sports scholarships being so competitive, I'm curious which sports tend to offer the most opportunities for scholarships. I'm trying to figure out which sports might provide the best chance for financial aid.

According to NCAA rules, the sports that offer the most scholarships are typically those that are labeled as "head-count" sports. In these sports, each scholarship is a full ride and counts as one against the team's total limit, regardless of whether it's used for a new recruit or a returning player. They cannot be divided up among players.

For NCAA Division I colleges, head-count sports for men are football (at schools that have the Football Bowl Subdivision, which is the highest level of Division I football) and basketball, each offering up to 85 and 13 full-ride scholarships per team respectively. For women, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and gymnastics are head-count sports, each offering up to 15, 12, 8, and 12 full-ride scholarships per team respectively.

Other sports fall under "equivalency sports." In these sports, coaches are allowed to divide the value of the scholarships among as many athletes as they want. Sports like baseball, soccer, and track and field fall under this category.

Keep in mind that these are the highest limits set by the NCAA, but actual scholarship opportunities can vary greatly by school, as not all institutions will provide the maximum number of scholarships possible.

Also, remember that collegiate athletic scholarships are very competitive. They require a high level of skill in your sport, as well as academic qualifications. Make sure to balance your focus on your sport with your academics and other extracurriculars, as strong performance in these areas can also open up non-athletic scholarship opportunities.
