The Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) for the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is a critical component of your application and includes six different physical and agility events: basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed arm hang, shuttle run, sit-ups, push-ups, and a one-mile run. Each event tests a unique physical skill, endurance level, or muscular strength, so prepping for the CFA requires a balanced and varied training strategy.

1. Basketball Throw: Strange as it may sound, this event tests your hand-eye coordination and upper body strength. Practice throwing a basketball from a kneeling position, focusing on the techniques of leveraging your arm strength and body momentum.

2. Pull-ups/Flexed Arm Hang: For men, it's a pull-up event whereas, for women, it's a flexed arm hang. For pull-ups, start with assisted pull-ups if necessary and gradually reduce the assistance. For the flexed arm hang, you'll need to build endurance in your arm and shoulder muscles. Time yourself and try to gradually increase your hang time each day.

3. Shuttle Run: This test measures agility and speed. Incorporate sprinting into your training regimen, and practice changing directions quickly.

4. Sit-ups: Start doing sit-ups every day, gradually increasing the number you can do in two minutes. Ensure proper form to prevent injury.

5. Push-ups: These test upper body strength and endurance. Practice daily sets of push-ups, gradually increasing the number you do each day. Start with knee push-ups if necessary.

6. One-Mile Run: Endurance is key for this event. Incorporate long-distance running, interval training, and sprinting into your workout regimen to build your cardiovascular strength and improve stamina.

Remember, perseverance is critical when training for the CFA. Don't be discouraged if you can't meet the required standards at first. Try to improve a little each day and keep a positive mindset. Lastly, make sure to combine your physical training with proper nutrition and adequate recovery to prevent injury and ensure consistent progress. Good luck with your CFA and the USMMA application process!
