What are the tuition and fees at the US Merchant Marine Academy?

I'm trying to understand the financial commitment of attending the US Merchant Marine Academy. Can someone explain the undergraduate tuition and fees? Are there any additional costs I should be prepared for? How do these compare to other service academies?

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is unique among the service academies because it doesn't charge tuition or room and board. This benefit is similar to other service academies like the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. These service academies provide free tuition, room, and board, and even provide a stipend to cover expenses like uniforms and books.

However, to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, there are few fees you need to be aware of. The estimated fees for incoming students include a one-time laptop and required software purchase (or rental) which can cost from $2,000 to $3,000. You'll also need a uniform, which will cost approximately $1,800 to $2,200. There could be additional miscellaneous expenses, like textbooks and other school supplies.

When comparing to other service academies, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's fees are in line with the other academies. All of the academies require students to purchase uniforms and equipment upon entering the academy. In most cases, the initial expenses are similar to those at the USMMA.

The value that comes from attending USMMA, like other service academies, is enhanced by the full-tuition scholarship, which makes the academy financially viable for many students. Remember, in exchange for these benefits, graduates of the service academies are required to serve in the military or merchant marine for a certain period after graduation. Therefore, when considering attending a service academy, it is essential to factor in not just the financial commitment but also the commitment to service that is required after graduation.
