Are there specific requirements for transfer students at the Merchant Marine Academy?

I've been looking into transferring to the Merchant Marine Academy, but I'm not sure what requirements or prerequisites are expected of transfer students. Does anyone know what specific criteria they assess for transfer applications?

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is unique in comparison to many traditional universities when it comes to transfer students. It's important to note that the academy does not accept transfer students in a typical sense. In its official capacity, the USMMA refers to transfer applicants as "Prior Service Applicants" to distinguish them from graduating high school seniors.

However, prior college coursework does not guarantee direct placement into a higher class year. Even those with some college background usually enter as plebes (first-year midshipmen) and undertake the full four-year program.

For the application, the key requirements remain the same as for traditional applicants:

1. Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident applying for citizenship

2. Be of good moral character

3. Meet the physical, security, suitability, and character standards necessary for commission in the USN Reserve, U.S. Coast Guard, or other service branches

4. Be at least 17 years old and have not passed your 25th birthday before July 1 in the year of your admission.

However, prior service applicants must also submit their military performance record and an endorsement from their commanding officer. This applies to service members and veterans from all U.S. Armed Forces, including active duty, reserve, and National Guard.

It would be a good idea to reach out to the Admissions Office directly for further clarification. They can give you detailed guidance on your unique situation and provide helpful advice on preparing a strong application.
