Parent Scholarships for Students?

I heard there are scholarships that parents can apply for on behalf of their kids. Does anyone know how these work or where to find them? My parents want to help but we're not sure where to start.

While it's true that some scholarships allow parents to apply on behalf of their student, most require the student themselves to apply. These scholarships often focus on certain demographics or family situations (e.g., scholarships for children of veterans or union members). I would recommend you begin by looking within your parents' workplaces, unions, clubs, or other affiliations for scholarships.

Another avenue are community organizations that your parents are a part of. Many service clubs, church groups, and societies offer scholarships for children of active members. It would be helpful to have your parents check with these organizations.

Additionally, there are many scholarship search tools online. One you might find particularly helpful is Appily's scholarship database, which can filter scholarships based on various criteria. You'll want to be careful to double-check the eligibility for each, but if your parents are helping with the search, it could be a valuable resource.

Remember, while parents can certainly be involved in the scholarship search and application process, the essays and materials often need to be in the student's voice. So as a student, while it's great that your parents are eager to help, be sure that you are the one doing the actual writing and submitting. It should reflect your work, achievements, and aspirations.

Lastly, keep in mind that applying for scholarships can be very competitive. Therefore, applying to multiple scholarships increases your chances of success. Don't be deterred if you don't win the first few you apply for. Persistence can pay off!
