American Legion Scholarships for College Students?

I'm a junior researching scholarships and I've heard the American Legion has some for college students. Does anyone have experience with these scholarships? How can I apply and what are the eligibility criteria?

Hello! It's true that the American Legion offers several scholarships for high school students planning to attend college. They're committed to supporting education, particularly for children of veterans. Here's a brief overview of their main scholarships:

1. American Legion Scholarship: This scholarship is available to high school seniors who are the direct descendants (i.e., child, grandchild, great-grandchild, or a legally adopted child) of American Legion members. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Applications are usually made available starting November 15th of the student's senior year.

2. Samsung American Legion Scholarship: This program offers scholarships to high school juniors who participate in and complete the Boys State or Girls State programs and are direct descendants of wartime U.S. military veterans who served on active duty. Eligibility is determined through a point system, evaluated based on applicants' involvement and leadership within school and community, and academic interests and achievements.

3. Legacy Scholarship: This scholarship is for children of active duty military members who died on or after September 11, 2001, as well as children of post-9/11 veterans with a VA disability rating of 50% or higher. The scholarship can be used for undergraduate or postgraduate study at an accredited institution in the U.S.

In general, to apply for these scholarships, go directly to the American Legion's website. They have detailed instructions and deadlines. As with all scholarships, make sure to start the application process well in advance. Best of luck!
