Finding a Free College Scholarship: Where to Start?

I'm aiming to find scholarships that could cover the cost of college without loans. Does anyone have recommendations on where to look or how to apply for scholarships that require no repayment?

Many financial aids are available that do not require repayment - known as scholarships and grants. When looking for these, start by:

1. High School Counselor's Office: They often have a portfolio of local scholarships and also have a good familiarity with the students they counsel. They can suggest some right-fit scholarships for you to apply for.

2. College Financial Aid Office: Every college has its own unique scholarship opportunities. Therefore, visit the Financial Aid Office's website of the schools you are considering and look for "institutional scholarships" or "merit-based scholarships." You may find department-specific scholarships, merit scholarships, or even scholarships for first-generation college students.

3. Online Scholarship Search Platforms: There are numerous online resources. Appily (previously known as Cappex) can be a great tool for finding scholarships. Also, look into common opportunities like the Coca-Cola Scholars Program or the Gates Scholarship. Remember to vet these scholarships to ensure that they're legitimate.

4. Local Organizations, Businesses, and Leadership Programs: Local organizations, or even your employers, sometimes offer scholarships for community members or employees' children. Leadership programs like HOBY and RYLA also have scholarships which you might qualify for.

5. FAFSA and CSS Profile: Always fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile, as they're necessary for need-based scholarships.

Remember, the early bird gets the worm. So, start early! Make sure you understand the application process for each scholarship, including deadlines, required documentation, and eligibility criteria. Your patience, dedication, and early action could result in a significant financial reward! Good luck!
