International Students and Scholarship Programs

I'm an international student looking at colleges in the U.S. and wondering about scholarship programs available to me. What programs should I be looking at, and do application processes differ for international students?

Hello,

You're making a smart move by considering scholarships as part of your college planning process—it can make U.S. higher education much more affordable. Many universities offer scholarships directly to international students, so be sure to check the financial aid webpage for each college you're applying to.

Typically, there are two types of scholarships available for international students: need-based and merit-based.

1. Need-based scholarships are awarded based on your family's financial situation. The most prestigious universities, like Harvard and Yale, provide generous need-based scholarships that can cover virtually all costs for students with significant financial need.

2. Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on your academic, athletic, or other achievements. Many schools, including the University of Southern California and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, offer these kinds of scholarships.

Application processes for international students can be slightly different than for domestic students. For example, instead of submitting the FAFSA, which is used to determine financial need for U.S. students, you may be asked to submit different documentation demonstrating your family's financial circumstances.

Check each college's financial aid webpage and contact their admissions or financial aid offices if you have any questions. They're there to help guide you through the process.

Best of luck with your college and scholarship applications!
