Does the Air Force Academy count as military service?

I'm interested in attending the Air Force Academy, but I'm a bit confused about whether attending counts as military service. Can someone clarify how this works and what commitments are required?

Certainly, let's clarify this. The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) is indeed a military academy, and while attending it, you are considered a member of the U.S. military. This means you will receive military training and education, in addition to a traditional college education. However, attendance at the academy does not complete your military service requirement.

Following graduation from USAFA, you are actually commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. This commission mandates a commitment to serve as an active-duty officer in the Air Force for a minimum of 5 years following graduation.

There may be additional service commitments if you choose to pursue certain career fields or receive sponsored graduate education. For instance, if you become a pilot, your service commitment increases to 10 years after pilot training.

Remember to carefully evaluate this commitment, as it is a significant part of your decision to attend the Air Force Academy. Enjoy your journey, and best of luck.
