Essential scholarships every college student should apply for?

I'm starting to think about college financing, and I'd love to know what scholarships are considered must-apply. Are there ones that stand out as particularly important or popular for managing college costs?

Definitely! There are few 'big name' scholarships which bring sizable grants and are worth considering.

1. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program: This program gives out 150 scholarships each year, each worth $20,000. High school seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA may apply and the selection is based largely on leadership, service, and action that positively impacts others.

2. Gates Millennium Scholars Program: Although more specific in its demographic—this program targets minority high students who demonstrate financial need and leadership—it provides a substantial renewable scholarship that covers unmet need and self-help aid.

3. The Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarships: This scholarship program offers financial assistance to students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement. Several scholarships are available each targeting different demographics.

4. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship: This program is available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need. The amount varies but can cover a significant portion of the educational expenses through graduation.

Remember, however, that while applying for competitive scholarships can result in substantial money for college, there are many smaller, less competitive ones that can collectively add up to a significant amount. Consider applying for those too.

Finally, always remember to fill out your FAFSA, which grants you access to federal grants and loans. If your Student Aid Index (SAI) is low enough, you may qualify for a Pell Grant, which is free aid that you don't have to pay back.
