College Scholarships for Descendants of Veterans

Does anyone know about scholarships for college that are specifically for descendants of military veterans? My grandfather served in the army, and I'd appreciate any guidance on scholarships I might be eligible for. Thanks in advance!

Of course, I'd be happy to provide some information on scholarships for descendants of military veterans.

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is an important one. This scholarship is available to children or legally adopted children of active-duty military or National Guard, and Reserve personnel who passed away on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. Also eligible are children of post-9/11 veterans who have a combined disability rating of 50% or greater from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

AMVETS also offers a scholarship program to veterans/active military, their sons, daughters, or grandkids. It's a one-time $4,000 scholarship granted annually, and each recipient uses the award for undergraduate study.

The Army Scholarship Foundation offers scholarships to the children of current or former Army service members or spouses of current Army service members.

The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund is open to the children of military personnel who have been killed or permanently disabled in an operational mission or training accident.

Scholarship programs such as these tend to be quite competitive, so it's important to make sure your application is well-rounded. This includes focusing on academic achievement, as well as your involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. And remember, the deadlines for these applications can vary, so be sure to check each scholarship's specific deadline.

Also, your high school's guidance counseling office is more than likely to have information on local scholarships for descendants of veterans. And don't forget to fill out your FAFSA; it opens the door for grants and work-study opportunities in addition to scholarships. Best of luck with your college financing journey!
