Veteran scholarships for college?

I have a family member who's a veteran planning to attend college soon. I'm hoping to help them figure out what scholarships for college might be available for veterans. Any tips or places to look first?

Absolutely, kudos to your family member for wanting to further their education. Many higher learning institutions and external organizations offer scholarships and educational benefits for veterans.

1. Post-9/11 GI Bill: Veterans who have served active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, may receive the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. These provide tuition assistance, a housing allowance, and stipends for books and supplies.

2. Yellow Ribbon Program: This program can help to cover costs in private schools which can be higher than the maximum amount the GI Bill will cover. Participating schools agree to waive a portion of that excess cost, and the Department of Veterans Affairs will match that amount.

3. Service-specific scholarships: Each branch of the military offers scholarships.

4. State Veteran Benefits: Some states have their own financial aid programs.

5. Veteran-specific scholarships: These are funded by private organizations and foundations like the American Legion Auxiliary and VFW.

6. Federal Student Aid: FAFSA is always worth completing, as many veterans qualify for Pell Grants which don’t have to be repaid.

Push them to seek advice from the financial aid offices and veteran services at their prospective schools to understand the best options for their situation. Also, Appily (formerly Cappex) is a resource for finding scholarship opportunities tailored to individual circumstances, including being a veteran. It's truly commendable what they're trying to achieve, and they have various resources available to assist them in their journey.
