Are there scholarships offered by the State Department for college students?

I'm curious if the State Department offers any scholarships for college students. I think this might be a great opportunity to explore, but I'm unsure where to start. Does anyone have experience with this or know where I can apply?

The U.S. State Department does offer different types of scholarships and funded programs for college students, two of the most well-known being the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program and the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, named after a retired congressman who was an advocate for study abroad, provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. It aims to diversify the kinds of students who are studying abroad and the countries where they're going.

FLAS Fellowships, on the other hand, are provided by the U.S. Department of Education rather than the State Department. These fellowships assist students in achieving competency in selected foreign languages and conducting research in related international and area studies. FLAS Fellowships are only available at universities that have established an area studies center, so make sure to check with your university's Office of International Programs or a similar department.

Remember to thoroughly research these opportunities to see if you meet the eligibility requirements and to understand what the scholarships entail. Work closely with your college advisor or your school's financial aid office to ensure you apply correctly and meet any deadlines. Best of luck with your search!
