Any scholarships for college students in West Virginia?

Being from West Virginia, I'm trying to scout out scholarships that are offered to students in my state. Does anyone have recommendations on where I should look or any specific scholarships I might be eligible for?

Certainly! I'm glad to see you're exploring the financial options available. Keep in mind, you might want to look at both national scholarships, as well as those specifically focused on West Virginia residents.

A good starting point for in-state scholarships is the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. They oversee several state-funded scholarships such as the PROMISE Scholarship and the West Virginia Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship.

1. The PROMISE (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-State Student Excellence) Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship program open to West Virginia students who meet GPA and test score requirements. Currently, this scholarship offers up to $4,750 per year towards the cost of tuition at a public or independent institution in West Virginia.

2. The West Virginia Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship is designed for students who are pursuing an education in the fields of engineering, science and technology.

Aside from this, many community organizations, companies, and foundations in West Virginia also offer scholarships:

1. The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Scholarship, for example, is the largest community foundation in Central Appalachia and offers multiple scholarships to West Virginia students each year.

2. The EQT Students of Excellence Scholarship is funded by the EQT Corporation and offers scholarships to students in counties where EQT has an operational presence.

3. Furthermore, the Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars program provides financial aid for students pursuing a teaching career.

Remember to also check with any colleges or universities you're interested in as they might have institution-specific scholarships available. And don't forget about national scholarships. Even though they may be more competitive, they can offer significant funding opportunities.
