How many full college scholarships are available for softball pitchers?

I'm a pitcher on my softball team and considering my options for college scholarships. Are full scholarships common for softball pitchers, and how many are typically awarded per year?

It's fantastic that you're seeking opportunities to leverage your abilities as a pitcher to land a scholarship. Full scholarships for softball, however, are far less common than you might expect. Collegiate softball teams fall under "equivalency sports" in the NCAA division guidelines, rather than "head count" sports.

What that means is that softball teams are allocated a set number of scholarships per team, which they then divide amongst their players. In NCAA Division I, each softball team is allowed up to 12 scholarships, while Division II allows up to 7.1. In Division III, there are no athletic scholarships, but there are other forms of financial aid available. The important part is that these scholarships are usually split among multiple players, rather than awarded fully to one individual.

For pitchers specifically, there's no fixed number of scholarships awarded each year. Being one of the most crucial positions on a softball team, coaches often invest scholarship funds for pitchers. However, how much you receive can vary depending on several factors such as your pitching skills, academic standing, and the budget distribution of a particular team.

With that in mind, your best approach would likely be showcasing your skills, improving your game continually, keeping your academic records strong, and actively reaching out to coaches of the colleges you're interested in to express your interest and discuss scholarship possibilities. Good luck!
