What's the process for international applicants at Boston University?

I'm curious about how Boston University handles international applicants. Are there specific requirements or resources available for international students during the application process? I'm trying to gather all the info as I start my application prep.

Boston University Welcome Services provides a comprehensive spectrum of resources for international students, guiding them while they navigate their respective college application processes. This includes immigration services, orientation programs, and support throughout their time at BU.

For international applicants, the basic application process is similar to that for domestic students. You’ll apply using the Common App or QuestBridge Application, where you’ll indicate that you’re an international applicant. This will prompt the system to ask you for additional personal and educational details.

A key requirement for international applicants is demonstrating English-language proficiency. If your primary language is not English or your education has not been primarily in English, you'll have to submit results from one of the approved English language exams. BU accepts official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Duolingo English Test (DET).

Another unique aspect for international students is the financial aid process. Unlike domestic applicants, international students are not eligible for federal financial aid. However, Boston University does provide a limited amount of financial aid for international students. To be considered for this, along with your application, submit the CSS Profile.

Be aware that in addition to the standard application materials, you may also need to send in translated and/or evaluated transcripts (by a BU-approved agency) if your academic records are in a language other than English or if your school uses a grading scale different from the U.S standard 4.0 scale.

Lastly, pay attention to visa requirements if you’re accepted and plan to enroll. After you are admitted and confirm your intention to enroll at BU, the university’s International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) will provide guidance for obtaining your F-1 student visa.

The BU Admissions website houses all these specifics and more so I would advise spending some time going through it thoroughly. This should give you a holistic picture of all you need to successfully navigate your application as an international student!
