I'm thinking about applying to the University of Illinois and was wondering which majors are the most popular or well-regarded there. Any suggestions or insights would be super helpful!
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a large, public research university with a variety of well-regarded programs across multiple disciplines. While it's important to note that the "best" major for any student depends on their individual interests, career goals, and academic strengths, some of the traditionally strong and popular programs at U of I include:
1. Engineering: Several of the engineering departments at UIUC rank among the strongest in the nation. The university is especially recognized for its programs in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering. The Grainger College of Engineering, named after the founder of the industrial supply company Grainger, and its Department of Computer Science are also exceptionally respected.
2. Business: The Gies College of Business, particularly its Accountancy and Finance programs, has consistently been highly ranked and produces numerous successful graduates each year.
3. Agriculture Sciences: Given its Midwestern location, UIUC's College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences is world-renowned, particularly its programs in Agricultural and Biological Engineering and Food Science and Human Nutrition.
4. Information Sciences: The School of Information Sciences at UIUC was the top-ranked iSchool in the nation in 2021. Its Library and Information Science program is exceptionally well-regarded.
5. Physics/ Astronomy: The Department of Physics at UIUC is one of the top in the nation. The department and its faculty are known for their significant contributions to our current understanding of physics.
Again, the above-listed programs are only a few of the strongest or most popular majors at UIUC. The university offers more than 150 undergraduate programs, and it would be beneficial to also consider other relevant factors such as class size, internship/research opportunities, study abroad programs, job placement rates, and available extracurriculars related to your intended field of study when choosing a major.
