Living and studying in Washington DC - what are the top schools?

I'm considering Washington DC for college life and want to know the most prestigious schools there. How is the experience unique to DC, and what programs are these institutions well-known for?

Washington DC has several reputable colleges and universities, each known for its specialties. The most prestigious among them are Georgetown University, George Washington University, and American University.

Georgetown University is highly regarded and is known for programs in International Relations, Political Science, and Finance. Georgetown's School of Foreign Service is widely recognized as one of the world's top schools in International Affairs. In addition, Georgetown's proximity to a plethora of international organizations, non-profits, and governmental agencies provides ample opportunities for internships and networking.

George Washington University, commonly referred to as GW, sits at the heart of DC, a few blocks from the White House. It has a strong reputation for its programs in Political Science, International Affairs, and Journalism. GW is also famous for its School of Media and Public Affairs, where students often find internships at nearby media organizations.

American University, while a bit farther from downtown, is another great institution, particularly strong in International Relations, Journalism, and Business. Notably, its School of Communication is highly regarded, especially the Journalism program.

Being in DC, these universities offer the unique experience of studying in the nation's capital, close to the political, social, and cultural hub of the country. The city offers countless opportunities for internships, networking events, and job prospects post-graduation, especially for those students interested in politics, international affairs, media, arts, and humanities. It's also culturally rich with numerous museums, art galleries, historic sites, and cultural events which can contribute to a well-rounded college experience.

However, it's important to visit these campuses if you can, and see which feels like the right fit for you. The vibe, campus culture, location, and specific programs offered can shape your college experience significantly.
