What's the campus vibe like at Soka University in California?

I'm considering applying to Soka University in California but don't know much about it. How's the community and student life on campus? Any insights on its academic strengths would be appreciated!

Soka University of America (SUA), located in Aliso Viejo, California, is known for its tight-knit and supportive community. With a very low student-to-faculty ratio (8:1 in 2023) and an emphasis on small class sizes, you can expect an intimate and engaging academic setting. This allows for personalized attention and fosters strong relationships with both professors and peers.

SUA's campus is well-regarded for its beautiful location and serene atmosphere. Nestled in the rolling hills of Orange County, it offers a tranquil setting for study and contemplation. Students often relay that the campus feels like a close community, partly due to the small student size of around 450 undergraduate students.

Student life at Soka is fairly active. There are numerous student organizations and clubs covering a wide range of interests, from arts to environmental activism. Because Soka emphasizes creating global citizens, there's a great deal of cultural diversity on campus, with students from many different countries.

In terms of academic strengths, SUA offers a liberal arts curriculum with a strong emphasis on foreign language, study abroad, and a core curriculum grounded in the principles of peace, human rights, and the creative coexistence of nature and humanity. All students are required to spend a semester abroad in their third year, funded by the university, which speaks to the university's commitment to global immersion and understanding.

Lastly, the university is known for its commitment to financial aid. It's one of few institutions that attempt to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need which can be a major draw for many students.

Keep in mind, as a smaller liberal arts university, SUA may not offer as many course selections or majors as larger universities might. They offer a BA in Liberal Arts with concentrations in Environmental Studies, Humanities, International Studies, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
