SUNY Alfred vs SUNY Forestry: Which to Choose?

I'm trying to decide between SUNY Alfred and SUNY Forestry for environmental programs. Does anyone have insights on what the student life, class sizes, and extracurriculars are like at each? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Both SUNY Alfred and SUNY Forestry have their own unique offerings when it comes to environmental programs, so it ultimately depends on what exactly you're looking for in your college experience.

SUNY Alfred State College is a smaller institution, with about 1,900 students in total. This means that class sizes are generally small which can foster a more intimate and connected learning environment. Student life at Alfred State is vibrant, with a sizable residential population and many clubs and organizations centered around a variety of interests, including environmental groups.

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), on the other hand, is one of the top colleges nationally for studying environmental science. It is a much more specialized school and is known for its strong research and fieldwork opportunities. ESF offers over 25 undergraduate programs all focused on the environment. It also has strong ties with Syracuse University, allowing students access to additional courses, extracurriculars, and student life opportunities at a larger institution.

For extracurriculars, SUNY Alfred boasts more than 90 student clubs and organizations, which can provide plenty of opportunities for engagement beyond the classroom. SUNY ESF has around 40 student organizations, but keep in mind that they are all focused on the environment, natural resources, and related fields.

In terms of proximity to nature, SUNY Forestry might have an edge. It's located in Syracuse, New York, pretty close to the stunning Finger Lakes region, which could certainly be an appealing factor for someone interested in environmental studies.

Choosing between the two depends on what you prioritize in your college experience. If you prefer a smaller, more intimate college experience with a broader range of study and extracurricular options, SUNY Alfred could fit the bill. If you're interested in a specialized education in environmental studies, prefer larger class sizes, and wish to join highly focused clubs and organizations, then SUNY Forestry would be a good choice. Look into the specific environmental programs at each school, and perhaps reach out to current students or alumni to get a feel for each environment. In the end, it's about where you think you'll thrive and be happiest.
