I'm considering applying to the University of Delaware in Newark, DE, but I'm not sure about what their admissions process is like. Could anyone share insights on the application requirements, deadlines, and overall atmosphere of the campus?
The University of Delaware (UD) uses its own application system, separate from the Common Application or Coalition Application. The application asks for information about your academic history, extracurricular involvement, and personal background. You will also write a statement about why you want to attend UD.
Academically, UD recommends that you complete a challenging curriculum in high school. While specific course requirements and recommendations can vary based on the school within UD to which you are applying (Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering, etc), generally you should have completed a rigorous high school curriculum involving advanced coursework when available.
UD is a test-optional school as of the 2025-2026 application cycle, meaning it’s up to you whether or not to submit your SAT or ACT scores. If you feel your scores accurately reflect your abilities and would strengthen your application, go for it! But if you think your scores do not represent your abilities well, you can forgo submitting them.
Application deadlines for students entering in Fall 2025 are November 1st for Early Action and January 15th for Regular Decision. If you apply for Early Action, you'll hear back by January 31st. If you apply for Regular Decision, you'll hear back by Mid-March.
For the overall campus atmosphere, students have been known to describe UD as having a vibrant and engaging campus life with a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. UD boasts over 400 student organizations, so you're likely to find a club or group that matches your interests. UD also holds events like football games, concerts, lectures, and cultural events throughout the year, providing a diverse array of experiences for students. The campus is located in Newark, a small city that provides a good balance of urban and suburban living environments with plenty of green spaces and a neat college-town feel.
Remember, though, that these are just generalities - the best way to truly understand a school's atmosphere is to visit it yourself, if possible. Consider a campus tour or attending an info session, whether virtually or in person, to get a better sense of the "vibe" at UD.
