How are the admissions at the University of North Texas?

I'm interested in applying to the University of North Texas and wondering how competitive the admissions are. Has anyone gone through the process and can share their experience or any tips for applying?

The University of North Texas (UNT) has a quite approachable admissions process compared to some more selective schools. The university has a fairly high acceptance rate, historically around 74%, making it less competitive than some other institutions. However, each application is evaluated comprehensively, looking at all aspects of a student's high school experience.

For starters, UNT accepts the ApplyTexas or the Common App, both of which allow you to apply to multiple schools using the same basic information, with some additional specific questions and essays for each school that must be completed separately. Try to be attentive when filling out the application to avoid any errors.

In terms of academic credentials, UNT generally prefers to see an unweighted high school GPA of around 3.0 or higher, and a solid curriculum of challenging courses (like Honors, AP, dual-enrollment). Keep in mind, UNT does have automatic admission criteria based on your class rank, but if you don't meet these, your application will be reviewed holistically, which means your essay and other factors will carry more weight.

Speaking about essays, make sure your personal essay is well-written and proofread. This is where you get to showcase your personality and explain any circumstances that may not be evident from the rest of your application.

For the admissions test, UNT is test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle, so you have the option to submit an ACT or SAT score if you believe it would benefit your application, but it's not a requirement.

Lastly, beyond your academics, UNT looks at several personal factors, including extracurricular activities, leadership experiences, community service, and work experiences, and the impact and depth of involvement in these areas. Demonstrating commitment and growth in outside interests can greatly enhance your application.

Don't hesitate to reach out to UNT's admissions office if you have any specific questions. They can be a great resource as you navigate the application process. Good luck!
