Virginia is a state rich in excellent higher education institutions, each offering unique qualities and strengths. Here are a few that consistently rank well for undergraduate education.

1. University of Virginia (UVA): One of the country’s top public universities, UVA has a very strong undergraduate focus and is known for its rigorous curriculum, with prominent programs in Business and Engineering. Its Jeffersonian architecture and location in Charlottesville are often highly praised.

2. William & Mary: This is the second oldest college in the country and has a reputation for fostering a close-knit student community. It's known for Political Science, History, and Biology.

3. Virginia Tech: Renowned for its College of Engineering and College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, Virginia Tech is also recognized for its Research & Development programs.

4. George Mason University: It's a diverse and innovative school with strong programs in Economics, Computer Science, and Global Affairs.

5. James Madison University: Known for its programs in Business, Health, and Education. Students often highlight the community feel on campus and the school's student-centric approach.

6. University of Richmond: It's a small, private liberal arts university that offers strong programs with a lot of individualized attention due to the low student-to-faculty ratio.

7. Virginia Military Institute (VMI): The oldest state-supported military college in the U.S., offering distinct experiences for students interested in military discipline combined with strong academics.

Remember that which university is "best" can vary greatly depending on a student's interests, strengths, and career goals. To choose the right school, consider factors like the availability of your intended major, campus culture, geographic location, cost, financial aid availability, and opportunities for research or internships in your field of interest.
