Cornell Human Ecology: Is it worth considering?

I'm thinking about applying to the College of Human Ecology at Cornell. Does anyone have insights on how competitive it is, and what kind of opportunities it might offer?

The College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is indeed a unique academic institution. It offers a distinctive fusion of liberal arts and applied social sciences oriented toward real-world issues.

As for competitiveness, it's important to remember that all of Cornell's colleges are highly selective. However, the College of Human Ecology is somewhat less sought-after than some of Cornell's other colleges, like Engineering or Arts & Sciences. This doesn't mean it's less prestigious; it just reflects the specialized nature of the College of Human Ecology. So, while it might be slightly less competitive, still expect a highly rigorous admissions process.

Regarding opportunities, Human Ecology provides a wide range of interdisciplinary programs that focus on human health, economic well-being, social justice, and sustainable futures. From fashion to nutrition and health, interior design to human development, there's a wide array of paths you could pursue. Many students go on to careers in healthcare, law, business, education, social service, policy, and design-related fields, among others.

Based on alumni testimonials, the engagement with faculty is also strong, and there are many opportunities for research, which is not a given in many undergraduate programs. The college also provides excellent access to internships because of its applied focus, and many students participate during their junior or senior years, providing real world experience before graduation.

Overall, if you're looking for an education that combines a strong liberal arts foundation with an applied, real-world focus on human-related issues, the College of Human Ecology at Cornell could be a great fit for you.
