How does financial aid work at George Mason?

As I'm researching schools, George Mason University caught my eye. I'm trying to understand how their financial aid packages work. Does anyone have experience with applying for financial aid there and could share what to expect?

George Mason University (GMU) offers financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities, just like most universities. The aid awarded can be based on merit, need, or sometimes both.

To start the process, you'll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which becomes available each year on October 1. The priority deadline for submitting your FAFSA is March 1. By filling out the FAFSA, GMU will get a clear picture of your family's financial situation.

If you're a Virginia resident, you will automatically be considered for the state-funded Commonwealth Award and Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP) grant if you do your FAFSA by the deadline. For out-of-state students, the Mason Grant is the most common form of need-based aid.

GMU also offers several merit-based scholarships. The most prestigious is the University Scholars award, which provides a full ride for in-state students or half tuition for out-of-state students. This award is highly competitive and requires a separate application.

So to summarize, you should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after its release on October 1 to access the most aid, especially need-based grants if you're eligible. Then, look into merit-based scholarships at the university, and don't hesitate to reach out to the financial aid office at GMU with any questions you may have. Their staff can offer clear guidance based on your specific circumstances.

Keep in mind, your financial aid package may not cover all of your expenses. It's also advisable to seek out external scholarships to augment your aid package should the need arise. However, ensure to inform the financial aid office about any external scholarships you receive, as they might affect your aid package.
