Choosing Between FIDM California and Other Fashion Schools

I've been accepted to FIDM in LA, but I'm also considering other fashion colleges in California. Can anyone share their experiences or insights on FIDM versus other schools? Trying to make the best decision for my future career in fashion.

First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to FIDM! It's amazing that you're exploring options in the vibrant field of fashion.

FIDM, or the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, is definitely notable for its hands-on, industry-focused approach to fashion education. It's located in LA, which is a major fashion hub, and this can provide you with plenty of opportunities for internships and networking. Many graduates have gone on to have successful careers in various sectors of the fashion industry.

That being said, one other comparable fashion school in California that you might consider is California College of the Arts (CCA). CCA's Fashion Design program intermingles the study of design, craft, and technology to prepare you for a career in the ever-changing fashion industry. It also offers close collaborations with students in the Graphic Design and Industrial Design programs.

It's also worth noting the fashion program at Otis College of Art and Design. One of the distinct advantages of this program is its Mentor Program where students get to work with established fashion design professionals in the industry and participate in special design projects.

Finally, you have Apparel Merchandising and Management program in Cal Poly Pomona which combines art, design and business.

Remember, it’s crucial to consider the specific strengths and opportunities offered by each program, the potential avenues for internships and job placements, and the overall environment and campus vibe. You should also evaluate the faculty, facilities, and opportunities for real-world experience in the fashion industry.

Personal visits and conversations with current students or alumni can be particularly beneficial. Contact the schools directly to ask about visit or shadowing opportunities—the admissions office is usually more than willing to help prospective students become accustomed to their school.

The best decision depends on your personal goals and the areas in fashion you're most interested in. For example, if you're interested in the business aspect of fashion, you might appreciate a program like Apparel Merchandising and Management program at Cal Poly Pomona more. If you're more focused on the creative/artistic side, FIDM or Otis could be better fits.

Congrats again and best wishes as you navigate this exciting decision!
