To waive or not to waive FERPA rights?

Hey guys, my counselor asked me if I want to waive my FERPA rights for college apps. I'm not exactly sure what this means and whether I should waive them or not. Any advice or experiences?

Hey there! I'm more than happy to help clarify the situation with FERPA rights. FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which is a U.S. law protecting the privacy of student education records. Waiving your FERPA rights during the college application process essentially means you're giving permission to the colleges you apply to access your recommendations and other educational records without you having the right to review them.

Many applicants choose to waive their FERPA rights because colleges tend to place more weight on recommendation letters and records they know the student hasn't seen. This way, colleges can trust that your recommendations are genuine and unfiltered. By keeping your FERPA rights, you'll potentially make your recommendations look less credible in the eyes of admissions officers. Also, it's important to consider that some recommenders may be less candid if they know you might review their letter.

Ultimately, the decision is yours, but waiving your FERPA rights is generally seen as the better choice to ensure your application is taken seriously. Hope this helps!
