Bassoon Players: Are There Scholarships for Us?

I've been playing the bassoon throughout high school and hope to continue in college. Does anyone know if there are specific scholarships for bassoon players? I'd appreciate any leads on music scholarships I can apply to!

Yes, there are indeed scholarships specifically for bassoon players and for other musicians as well. There are a variety of music scholarships which cover different instruments, including the bassoon. Here are a few I know of:

1. The John Philip Sousa Foundation offers the Dr. Robert Hawkins Memorial Scholarship. It's available to high school seniors involved in their school's music department. The bassoon could definitely be your ticket in there.

2. The National Federation of Music Clubs awards the NFMC Collegiate Wind Instrument Awards. This one is specifically for college sophomores, juniors, and seniors, majoring in music with a focus on a wind instrument, like the bassoon.

3. Each year, the Music Teachers National Association holds the MTNA Student Competitions, which includes a category for woodwind soloists. It's open to students who are studying their instrument at an advanced level.

4. There are also local music clubs and organizations that often provide scholarships to talented musicians.

Remember that not only can you get scholarships specifically for the bassoon, but you can also qualify for general music scholarships as well. The important thing is to search and apply for as many scholarships as you can and to not limit yourself only to music scholarships. There are always other scholarship opportunities out there based on other aspects of your profile, such as your grades, community involvement, or leadership roles.

Also, if you plan to study music in college, check if your potential schools offer music or instrument-specific scholarships. Some schools have amazing music programs and provide scholarships to talented musicians to attract them to their programs. You can usually find this information on the school's music department webpage or by reaching out to the department directly.

Good luck in your search, and keep up the great work with the bassoon!
