Any insights on life at UCSC?

I'm thinking about applying to UC Santa Cruz and just wanted to know what the student life is like there. How are the classes, professors, and overall vibe of the campus? Any cool traditions or things to know?

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) is a beautiful campus located in a coastal city and adjacent to a redwood forest, offering stunning views and outdoor activities. The campus is divided into ten residential 'colleges', each with its own unique theme, which adds to the sense of community and provides a smaller, more intimate environment within the larger university context. There's a strong emphasis on creating a welcoming, inclusive community, thanks to efforts from the various multicultural resource centers on campus.

Academically, classes are typically rigorous but there is a broad range of subjects. Professors appear to be generally engaged, approachable, and invested in their students' learning. Collaborative learning and open discourse is encouraged, fostering an environment of intellectual growth.

One unique tradition you may want to know about is what's known as 'First Rain'. When the first rain of the school year happens, students celebrate by running throughout the campus in the wet weather. It's something that many students look forward to!

Keep in mind, UCSC is known for being quite liberal and places high importance on social justice and activism. The overall vibe of the campus tends to reflect this mindset.

Also, the location of the campus means that public transportation is a must unless you have access to a car. Some students do find the campus to be separated from the city, which might be a disadvantage if you prefer a more urban environment.

Finally, UCSC also has great resources in place for first-year students to adapt and feel comfortable in their new environment, such as the Summer Orientation and Slug Orientation, both designed to introduce you to the campus, its resources, and your peers. It's a breathtaking campus with a vibrant student life and caring community.

Remember, the best way to get a feel for any campus is by visiting, if you have the chance, as everyone's experience can be a bit different.
