Considering Curtis Institute for Music

I've been thinking about applying to the Curtis Institute and was curious about what it's like to study there. How competitive is the admission process, and what should I focus on to strengthen my application? Would love to hear experiences from current or former students!

Response: Congratulations on considering the Curtis Institute of Music! Notably, Curtis is a highly competitive conservatory known for its commitment to providing a select number of students with a thorough education in music. With an acceptance rate that is often less than 5%, Curtis accepts some of the most talented and promising young musicians from around the world. Because of its small size and 100% scholarship policy, competition is steep for a seat in its student body.

In terms of strengthening your application, the audition is key at Curtis—the most important part of the application process. You'll want to select pieces that showcase not only your technical proficiency but also your musicality and ability to interpret music. It's a good idea to include different styles and periods in your repertoire to demonstrate your versatility.

On top of your audition, your application materials should include a detailed account of your musical experiences and achievements so far. This could include your participation in youth orchestras, competitions won, and any other notable performances.

Teacher recommendations are also important. If possible, try to get a recommendation from a distinguished musician or a well-respected music teacher who can speak to your talents, work ethic, and potential for growth.

However, remember it's not just about how well you play your instrument or sing, but also how well you can assimilate into the existing student body and contribute to the Institute's culture: the letters of recommendation, personal essays, and interviews offer opportunities to exhibit these soft skills.

With that being said, the best advice I can give you is to apply and give it your best shot. You'll be competing against top young musicians from around the world, but don't let that discourage you. Instead let it inspire you to prepare thoroughly and show them what you've got!

If you were looking for experiences from current or former students, I would suggest finding them on social media platforms or reaching out to the school's admission office for contacts. Curtis is so unique that it's worth hearing about it from those who have experienced it. Good luck with your process!
