New York City boasts an array of highly-rated public high schools, and these are typically considered the cream of the crop in terms of academics and extracurriculars:

1. Stuyvesant High School: Known for being academically rigorous, Stuyvesant offers a broad range of AP classes and boasts impressive graduation rates. It also provides an abundance of clubs and extracurriculars for students to participate in.

2. Bronx High School of Science: This school is another top NYC public high school that emphasizes a strong curriculum in the sciences. They have won more than 100 Nobel Prizes, showing their commitment to academic excellence.

3. Brooklyn Technical High School: This school focuses heavily on technology, engineering, and the sciences, and students have a variety of clubs and sports to choose from.

4. High School for Math, Science, and Engineering at City College: Here, students can expect a strong curriculum focused on the school's namesake subjects, along with engaging extracurricular activities.

5. Staten Island Technical High School: It offers strong academic programs with an emphasis on technical skills and practical learning.

Remember that admissions to these schools are selective and typically require the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT), with the exception of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, which requires an audition. With any of these schools, your student would surely have access to both outstanding academics and a variety of enriching extracurricular activities. Make sure to explore each option to see which school would best fit your student's academic and personal needs.
