What's the oldest university in the United States?

I'm working on a school project about the history of higher education, and I need to find out which university is the oldest in the United States. Can someone point me to the right direction with some context?

The University of Pennsylvania, based in Philadelphia, often claims to be the first to have become a university in 1779. However, the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States is Harvard University, established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Harvard was named after the university's first benefactor, a young minister named John Harvard of Charlestown, who, upon his death in 1638, left his library and half his estate to the institution. Ever since, it has continued to grow and evolve with significant impact in various sectors like law, business, medicine, and public administration.

Notably, the seven initial liberal arts colleges—Harvard, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania—are collectively known as the Ivy League, a term coined much later to refer to these highly prestigious and selective institutions.

Nonetheless, its intriguing to note the unique and rich history each of these universities carries, the feats they have achieved, and the visionaries they have produced over the centuries. Good luck with your project!
