I'm considering going to college in Louisiana and am interested in attending a Black university. Southern University is one, but are there others in the state I should know about?
In Louisiana, there are a couple of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in addition to Southern University. Southern University is a system that includes multiple campuses across the state.
1. Southern University and A&M College: Located in Baton Rouge, it's the flagship institution of the Southern University System.
2. Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO): This is a separate institution in the Southern University System, located in New Orleans.
3. Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA): This is another institution in the Southern University System that offers two-year degrees. It's located in Shreveport.
4. Grambling State University: Located in Grambling, it's known for its strong programs in education and athletics, among other things.
5. Xavier University of Louisiana: Located in New Orleans, it's the only Black and Catholic university in the U.S. and is well-regarded for its Pre-med and Pharmacy programs.
Keep in mind that each of these universities has its unique offerings, culture, and strengths. So, while they are all HBCUs, your experience can largely vary from one to another. It would be beneficial to research each one to see which might be the best fit for you in terms of academics, campus lifestyle, extracurricular opportunities, and more.
