What's campus life like at Occidental University?

I'm thinking about applying to Occidental University and would love to know more about campus life there. Are there any standout clubs or activities that I should know about?

Occidental College, not Occidental University, offers a vibrant campus life rooted in its Southern California location and its commitment to social justice. With about 2,000 students on campus, Occidental provides a tight-knit community with opportunities to create deep, meaningful connections.

There are more than 100 student clubs and organizations at Occidental, covering a broad range of interests. Notably, the college has a strong focus on activism and service clubs, reflecting its commitment to social justice. For example, one of the impactful clubs is Occidental's chapter of Amnesty International, a global human rights organization.

Athletics are also popular with 21 Division III sports teams as part of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Even if you're not participating in a sport, games are a common gathering ground for the Oxy community to cheer on the Tigers.

The campus also hosts an array of events such as TEDx Occidental, an event showing off student and faculty innovation. Arts-wise, the college takes advantage of its proximity to Los Angeles – student productions, concerts, film screenings, and speaker events occur frequently.

In terms of housing, Occidental guarantees housing for all four years, promoting a strong residential community. Students often remark on the beautiful views and the engaging themed halls like the Multicultural Hall, Food Justice Hall, and Art and Media Hall that foster common interest discussions and projects.

Lastly, Occidental's Southern California location makes it easy for students to explore off-campus activities. Los Angeles, being a short trip away, offers boundless opportunities for cultural experiences, internships, and fun.

It’s always a great idea to get in touch with current students or alumni if you can, as they can provide a first-hand perspective on what campus life is really like. But overall, expect a warm climate, a passion for service and social justice, and an incredibly involved community.
