What's it like attending NC State as a student?

I'm considering NC State in Raleigh, NC, for my college choice, but I'm curious about what student life is like there. How is the campus environment, and what are some of the best and worst parts about attending NC State?

As a major public research university, NC State offers a vibrant student life. On the positive side, many students like the school's large size because it provides many opportunities to get involved. There are over 700+ student organizations including academic, cultural, political, professional, recreational, and service clubs. Among these, the school's robust Greek community and numerous intramural sports teams stand out as especially active.

The campus, located in Raleigh, the state's capital, is also a major plus for students. Not only does this give students access to a bustling city with plenty of restaurants, shops, and cultural hubs, but it's also ideal for internships and job opportunities. Raleigh is part of the Research Triangle, known for its high-tech research and development, so it's particularly great for STEM majors.

As for the negatives, like any large university, class size can be an issue. Some students report that their large introductory science or math classes felt impersonal and that it was hard to connect with professors in those settings. However, as students advance through their course of study, classes tend to get smaller and more specialized.

Another common negative expressed by students is the lack of campus unity. Because the school is so large and spread out, and because it hosts numerous graduate and commuter students, some undergraduates report feeling a lack of campus cohesion.

However, please note that student experiences can vary widely based on factors like academic major, involvement in extracurricular activities, and personal preferences. Speaking to current students or recent graduates, or visiting the campus if possible, can help give a more personalized perspective.
