What should I know about Creighton University's admissions process?

I'm planning to apply to Creighton University and would love some tips on their admissions process. What are they looking for in prospective students, and are there particular strengths I should highlight in my application?

Creighton University, a private Jesuit university in Omaha, Nebraska, is known for its dedication to fostering a liberal arts education that promotes leadership and service. As for what Creighton is looking for in their prospective students, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Creighton takes a holistic approach to admissions, meaning they consider a variety of factors. These include your academic performance, the rigor of your high school curriculum, test scores (note they're optional but recommended), involvement in extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and personal statement. Here's a closer look at these factors.

1. Academic Performance: Creighton is moderately selective, with an acceptance rate of about 70%. The average GPA of admitted students tends to be around 3.8 to 3.9.

2. High School Curriculum: Your courses in high school are important too—it's not just about the grades you earn, but also the rigor of the courses you took themselves. A schedule that reflects a challenge—AP courses, honors, etc.—can swing favorably in your direction.

3. Test Scores: Creighton has been test-optional since the Fall 2020 application cycle; however, if your scores are strong, it's beneficial to include them. As for the middle 50% SAT and ACT scores, Creighton typically sees SAT scores between 1265-1430 and ACT scores between 26-31.

4. Extracurricular Activities: Like many universities, Creighton values students who make meaningful contributions outside of the classroom — be it through community service, clubs, or part-time jobs. Therefore, your extracurricular activities can play a significant role in shaping your application.

5. Counselor Evaluation Letter: The Secondary School Report for the Common Application works for this.

6. Personal Statement: In your personal statement, you should demonstrate self-reflection, clear communication, and unique insight. Be sure to address why you are interested in Creighton and how you believe you can add value to their campus community.

Remember that these factors are intertwined. For instance, if your test scores aren't strong, they will look even more closely at your GPA, course rigor, and other elements. So ideally, your application will be strong in all areas. However, if it's not, understand that one weak area does not necessarily preclude admission if other areas are strong. You can learn more about application requirements on Creighton's page: https://www.creighton.edu/admissions/find-application/undergraduate-student-applications.

Finally, apply by the priority deadline, December 1, to be considered for the most types of financial aid.

Good luck with the process! Be sure to really showcase your personal strengths and how they align with Creighton's mission to provide a comprehensive, values-centered learning experience.
