What is Harvey Mudd College like?

I'm considering applying to Harvey Mudd, but I don't know much about it. What's the culture like, and how rigorous are the academics? If anyone has personal experiences to share, I'd love to hear them!

Harvey Mudd is a part of the Claremont Colleges consortium, which means students can take classes and participate in activities at any of the five schools: Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, Pomona, Scripps, and of course, Harvey Mudd itself. This provides a unique blend of a small college and a larger university experience.

In terms of academic rigor, Harvey Mudd is known to have a challenging and intensive curriculum, especially in the STEM field. The college's science and engineering programs are particularly well-regarded. Students often attest to the workload being demanding, but they also praise the collaborative environment that is encouraged. It's common for students to work together in study groups for problem-solving and projects, fostering a strong sense of community.

In relation to the college's culture, Mudders—students at Harvey Mudd—tend to be very passionate about their fields of study. Besides the focus on academics, Harvey Mudd students are typically involved in research and applied learning opportunities. One unique aspect of Harvey Mudd is their Clinic Program, a form of experiential learning where students work on real-world, team-based projects for professional clients.

Additionally, while the college focuses on STEM, students are also required to take courses in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts to encourage a well-rounded education. This liberal arts framework embodies the core values—honesty, respect, and responsibility—of the HMC community, intending to prepare students to be socially responsible leaders in their respective fields.

Despite the rigorous academic life, fun and relaxation are also an integral part of the HMC culture. From events like the annual Unicycle Football game to MuddHacks (a hardware version of a Hackathon), there's a great balance between work and play.

It’s worth emphasizing that many students appreciate the accessibility of institutional resources and the supportive atmosphere from faculty members. Professors are often seen as approachable and invested in their students' success.

So, while the academics at Harvey Mudd are undoubtedly challenging, the collaborative environment and web of support make it manageable and rewarding. The school's combination of STEM focus, integrated humanities studies, and access to the other Claremont Colleges makes for a rich and vibrant college experience.
